Michael Peek

Michael Peek is the Deputy Director of the Office of Project Management.

The Office of Project Management (PM) provides corporate leadership, managerial guidance and assistance in the development and implementation of Department-wide policies, procedures, programs and management systems pertaining to project management and related activities. In support of these activities, PM develops independent cost estimates and conducts external independent reviews to validate the performance baselines, to include scope, cost and schedule, of the Department’s largest construction and environmental clean-up projects, an active project portfolio totaling over $30 billion. Additionally, PM coordinates, develops and promotes implementation of Department-wide project management-related policies, procedures and systems; develops and maintains a Departmental program of on-site assistance, assessment and analysis of contractor’s project control (earned value management) systems; and manages the Project Management Career Development Program (PMCDP) for the professional development, training and certification for the Department’s Federal Project Directors.

Before joining the Department of Energy, Mr. Peek served in the United States Navy as a member of the Navy’s Civil Engineer Corps (CEC) and Seabee Community. His last assignment was as the Chief, Engineering Division, Logistics Directorate (J-4), Joint Staff. Mr. Peek served multiple tours on the staffs of the Chief of Naval Operations (OPNAV), Secretary of the Navy, and Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Installations and Environment). Other key assignments included Director, Seabee Readiness Division, and Contingency Engineering Business Line Leader, Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC), Washington D.C, where he was responsible for the outfitting and sustainment of the Naval Construction Force, and the corporate delivery of engineering services in contingency environments; Commanding Officer, U.S. Naval Mobile Construction Battalion ONE; Resident Officer in Charge of Construction, U.S. Naval Research Laboratory; Chief, Field Engineering Branch and Test Group Engineer - HUNTERS TROPHY, Defense Nuclear Agency, Nevada Test Site; and Officer in Charge, Naval Support Unit, Bureau of Diplomatic Security, U.S. Department of State. He retired as a Captain, Civil Engineer Corps, United States Navy, on March 31, 2009.

Mr. Peek graduated from Texas A&M University in 1980 with a B.S. in Industrial Engineering. He earned a M.S. in Engineering (Construction Management) from the University of Texas in 1987 and a M.S. in National Resource Strategy from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in 2006. Mr. Peek completed Carnegie Mellon University’s Program for Executives and is a registered Professional Engineer (Civil), a certified Project Management Professional (PMP), Certified Cost Professional (CCP), and a Certified Facility Manager (CFM).
