The U.S. Department of Energy’s four Power Marketing Administrations are responsible for selling the electrical output from federally owned and operated hydroelectric dams. Together, the reach of these four Power Marketing Administrations — Bonneville Power Administration, Southeastern Power Administration, Southwestern Power Administration, and Western Area Power Administration — spans 34 states and supplies power to various regions throughout the country.

The federal hydropower system is the Pacific Northwest’s biggest source of clean energy. BPA markets wholesale electrical power from 31 federal dams in the Northwest that are operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Bureau of Reclamation.

Our service area encompasses a 15-state region of the central and western U.S. where our more than 17,000 circuit mile transmission system carries electricity from 57 hydropower plants operated by the Bureau of Reclamation, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the International Boundary and Water Commission
