Grid Deployment and Transmission

Deploying innovative solutions and advancing transmission systems across the country are essential to building out a better grid that achieves the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) goals to meet the growing demand for electricity and provide clean, reliable, secure, and resilient power to all Americans, with emphasis on Tribal nations, rural and remote communities, disadvantaged communities, and energy transition communities. Through historic investments from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act that have allowed for stronger public-private partnerships, DOE is expanding access to affordable, reliable electricity by maintaining and investing in critical generation facilities, increasing grid resilience, and modernizing and expanding transmission and distribution systems. With our current momentum, DOE plans to expand long-distance transmission line capacity by 16% by 2030, including building 7,500 miles of new transmission lines so as to connect low-cost energy with more communities.

Highlights

Transforming Transmission Infrastructure

The Grid Deployment Office (GDO) is accelerating the deployment of transmission infrastructure and evaluating national transmission needs. GDO works to develop new and updated tools for transmission modeling, analysis, and planning efforts, and implements DOE policies and programs to provide commercial facilitation support to advance transmission deployment.

GDO utilizes unique tools and authorities to drive investment in electric transmission through planning, financing, facilitation, and siting and permitting activities. This important work is creating good-paying jobs across the country, helping accelerate the development of new and upgraded high-capacity transmission lines, and support investments to modernize the flexibility and resilience of the electric grid.  To support the engagement of Tribal Nations in transmission planning and development activities, the Tribal Nation Transmission Program is providing on-call assistance from technical experts and funding to support Tribal participation in key transmission forums.

The Office of Electricity (OE) leads DOE’s research, development, and demonstration programs to drive innovation to strengthen and modernize our nation’s power grid. OE pioneers grid modernization advancements through these investments to extend the life of existing transmission and distribution facilities and to advance clean energy.  As these new innovative technologies become viable, GDO—working with states, industry, and energy sector stakeholders—will invest in deploying state-of-the-art technologies. Together, OE and GDO work to ensure that all types of resources can be integrated into the power grid, transmitted to meet electrical demand, and maintained to ensure overall electrical power system reliability, resilience, security, and affordability.
