EERE is working to ensure that all Americans benefit from energy innovation.
EERE supports the advancement of energy technologies and processes through these core mechanisms:
Funding. EERE regularly issues funding opportunities through its 11 technology suboffices and the Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer (SBIR/STTR) programs. This funding comes from congressional appropriations of your tax dollars. Diverse groups of innovators submit proposals for innovative energy solutions, and EERE invests in the most promising ideas.
World-class research and development. DOE’s 17 national laboratories have unparalleled facilities, tools, and expertise. The labs play an integral role in EERE’s funding and technical assistance initiatives and are responsible for some of the most significant developments in the history of energy technology.
Technical assistance. EERE offers technical assistance to communities, local, tribal, and state governments, building professionals, manufacturers, utility companies, and others to help them form realistic plans to improve their energy infrastructure. This assistance comes in various forms, depending on the recipients’ wants and needs. For example, the Energy Transitions Initiative Partnership Project offers analysis, planning, and implementation assistance specifically tailored to the needs of remote, island, and islanded communities, as well as analysis, planning, and implementation assistance.
Developing our brain trust. Through initiatives like the Lab-Embedded Entrepreneurship Program, the Clean Energy Innovator Fellowship, and various prizes and competitions designed to incentivize entrepreneurial innovators, EERE pairs up innovators with experts across DOE, the national labs, incubators, and more, to advance energy solutions and careers.
Why Energy Innovation Matters
The growing market for technologies that decrease energy costs, make energy consumption more efficient, and reduce our reliance on fossil fuels presents a generational opportunity to stimulate economic growth, boost America’s energy independence, and improve the health and well-being of the American people.
EERE is committed to bringing the benefits of energy innovation to every American by making the United States a global leader in renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies.
EERE Investment Snapshot
EERE has been driving groundbreaking advances in energy innovation for over four decades. The data and case studies in the 2024 EERE Investment Snapshot describe EERE’s recent successes in delivering the benefits of energy innovations to communities, companies, and industries across the country.
EERE has used targeted investments in applied research and development (R&D), demonstration and deployment expertise, in-kind technical assistance, and its unique convening power to drive energy innovation in select industries and technologies. While each field in EERE’s portfolio has seen remarkable progress, this report focuses on EERE’s impact and outcomes as a whole—demonstrating how continued investment in EERE can continue to benefit the United States.
Funding Opportunities
EERE invests in research and development to lower the cost of energy technologies, protect the private sector from financial risk, and ensure an equitable transition to a resilient economy.
Funding is awarded through an open, competitive process hosted primarily on the EERE Funding Opportunity eXCHANGE. Project selections are merit-based, emphasizing potential energy, environmental, and economic benefits.
Renewable Energy
EERE offers funding for renewable energy research and development. Renewable energy comes from unlimited, naturally replenished resources like the sun, tides, and wind. Renewable energy can be used for electricity generation, space and water heating and cooling, and transportation. The renewable energy pillar of EERE comprises four technology offices:
- Geothermal Technologies Office
- Solar Energy Technologies Office
- Water Power Technologies Office
- Wind Energy Technologies Office.
Buildings & Industry
EERE champions energy independence through its technical offices and programs that fund research and development and promote energy efficiency across all sectors of the U.S. economy. EERE works to decarbonize buildings, industrial, and government sectors through technical offices, programs, partnerships, and initiatives. The buildings and industry pillar of EERE comprises three technology offices:
- Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office
- Building Technologies Office
- Industrial Efficiency and Decarbonization Office.
Sustainable Transportation & Fuels
Sustainable transportation refers to low- and zero-emission, energy-efficient, and affordable modes of transport, including electric and alternative-fuel vehicles, as well as domestic fuels. Three EERE offices support the sustainable transportation and fuels pillar to increase access to domestic, clean transportation fuels and improve the energy efficiency, convenience, and affordability of transporting people and goods:
