Secretary’s Achievement Awards Recognize Excellence in Project Management
The Exascale Class Computing Cooling Equipment project brought 5,200 tons of additional cooling capacity to the Strategic Computing Complex at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The project was completed $20 million under budget and 10 months ahead of schedule.
WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) is pleased to announce it received three DOE Secretary’s Project Management Achievement Awards July 13, 2021.
Each year, the Department recognizes projects that have demonstrated excellence in project management. Specifically, the Secretary's Achievement Award is presented to project teams that have demonstrated significant results in completing projects under budget and ahead of schedule.
This year, three of NNSA’s Office of Acquisition and Project Management teams were awarded the Secretary’s Achievement Awards for the Exascale Class Computing Cooling Equipment (ECCCE) project, the Expand Electrical Distribution System (EEDS) project, and the Uranium Processing Facility (UPF) Substation Subproject.
“Each of these teams represents the best of what NNSA has to offer,” said Bob Raines, Associate Administrator of the Acquisition and Project Management when presenting the awards. “Dedicated to our national security mission, they go above and beyond using innovation and perseverance to deliver that mission on budget and schedule.”
The winning ECCCE team successfully completed a project to bring 5,200 tons of cooling capacity to support new exascale computing equipment in the Strategic Computing Complex at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The project was executed within a secure classified facility and was required to minimize disruption of ongoing operations. Led by NNSA’s John Gallegos, the team completed this project $20 million under budget and 10 months ahead of schedule.
Providing a reliable and efficient electrical distribution system to support current and planned operations at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), the winning EEDS project team was recognized for its perseverance, attention to detail, and focus on cost and schedule outcomes. The project team, led first by NNSA’s Tony Sy and later by Charles “Scott” Richey, overcame logistical risks and initial performance problems to deliver the project four months ahead of schedule and $1.1 million under budget in a safe and effective manner. The successful completion of this project has increased LLNL’s mission execution efficiency and positions it for future success.
Finally, the UPF Substation Subproject winning team delivered the Pine Ridge Substation at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, $16 million under budget and six months ahead of schedule. In leveraging a unique partnership with the Tennessee Valley Authority, the project team, led by NNSA’s Darryl Creasy, was able to execute a cost efficient, best value acquisition strategy with Tennessee’s premier power distribution delivery organization. The successful completion of this project is a critical component of NNSA’s mission to provide safe, efficient, and secure enriched uranium processing capabilities within the Nuclear Security Enterprise.
These awards are a testament to NNSA’s commitment to project excellence whose policies and organizational realignment in 2012 has successfully completed over $2.5 billion in projects under budget and on schedule.
