The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is proposing to provide funding to the University of Tennessee for the design, development, prototyping and lab testing of a power electronics converter and corresponding controller. The project would be completed over three Budget Periods (BPs). BP1 would focus on the design of the power conditioning system (PCS) converter and development of the flexible manufacturing plant (FMP) controller. BP2 efforts would be directed to building a scalable multi-port MW-scale PCS converter and testing the FMP controller. BP3 would then integrate, test, and validate the PCS converter. The developed PCS converter would have specific performance targets, along with power grid and cyber security requirements. This NEPA determination is applicable to all three BPs.
