NEPA Office Mission
The Office of NEPA Policy and Compliance (GC-54) assists DOE program and field offices in ensuring that the Department's proposed actions comply with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and related environmental review requirements (e.g., National Historic Preservation Act, Endangered Species Act) that are necessary prior to project implementation. The NEPA Office maintains NEPA expertise to support activities covering nearly every facet of the Department’s diverse and complex operations.
NEPA: Better Information, Better Decisions. The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) requires Federal agencies, including the Department of Energy, to consider the environmental effects of their proposed actions in their decision-making processes and inform and engage the public in those processes.

2024 DOE NEPA Rulemaking
U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) undertook a rulemaking in 2024 to add a categorical exclusion for certain energy storage systems, revise categorical exclusions for upgrading and rebuilding transmission lines and for solar photovoltaic systems, and make conforming changes to related sections of DOE’s regulations regarding implementation of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). DOE NEPA Contracting
DOE has established blanket purchase agreements (BPAs) with seven prime contractors – listed below – to provide NEPA support services under the General Services Administration (GSA), Multiple Award Schedule, Professional Services – Environmental Services - Category 541620 contracts. All DOE program and field offices may use the BPAs to acquire support for NEPA activities and other environmental tasks conducted in conjunction with or separately from the NEPA process.
