The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is proposing to provide federal funding to the Worcester Polytechnic Institute to demonstrate molten salt electrolysis of nature quartzite using the state of the are salt composition with the intent to produce silicon in one step with zero direct greenhouse gas emissions. All project work would occur within research laboratories located at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, MA and Boston University in Boston, MA.
