The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is proposing to provide federal funding to Stion for a project that involves performance testing, defect evaluation, and reliability testing of solar cells and modules that have copper indium gallium diselenide (CIGS) cell interconnects made by laser scribing of isolation lines.

The proposed project would involve laboratory-scale research and development, computer modeling, and data analysis. Stion proposes to develop a new monolithic interconnect CIGS technology designed to improve module efficiency and lower the levelized cost of electricity. This new interconnect would be formed by laser processing in one step after cell deposition on Stion‘s module manufacturing line in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Evaluating the resulting cells and modules would occur at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO and at Stion in San Jose, CA. Reliability testing of modules would occur at Stion's manufacturing facility in Mississippi.
