The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is proposing to provide funding to The Rector and Visitors of the University of Virginia to research optimization of the conversion process of benzene, ethylene, and oxidant to styrene using two types of reactors: a continuous solution phase batch reactor and a gas phase flow reactor. This new catalytic process of styrene production would offer significant potential for reduction of energy intensity and carbon dioxide emissions.
