The Westinghouse Accident Tolerant Fuel program goals include the design, licensing and manufacture of Lead Test Rods for reactors and continues work on U3Si2 and UN fuels and chromium coated zirconium and silicon carbide cladding. Oxidation resistant U3Si2 is the main focus of this work with fuel options such as U15N and high thermal conductivity uranium dioxide as backup fuel options. Silicon carbide composite cladding from General Atomics consists of Hi-Nicalon-Sulfur silicon carbide fibers infiltrated with silicon carbide using chemical vapor infiltration and an outer, hermetic layer of silicon carbide deposited using chemical vapor deposition.
