August 14, 2018The University of Nevada Las Vegas, in collaboration with Sandia National Laboratory, proposes to enhance understanding of the mechanisms and thermal-mechanical-chemical parameters controlling the instant release fraction and matrix dissolution of high-burnup (burnup > 45 gigawatt-days/metric ton of uranium) spent nuclear fuels and the subsequent formation, stability, and phase transformations of high-burnup spent nuclear fuels alteration products under long-term storage and geological disposal conditions (e.g., high-temperature storage, α-radiolysis).
