Funding will support the project team's small-scale research and development activities to characterize, enrich, and potentially culture microbial constituents that naturally produce bio-ethane and propane. Specifically, the project team will (1) recover and characterize seafloor sediment from the Guaymas Basin; {2) examine, constrain, and identify microbial genotypes engaged in ethano and propanogenesis; (3) conduct targeted enrichment of genotypes; and (4) and assess commercial feasibility.
