The mission of the Accident Tolerant Fuel program is to develop the next generation of Light Water Reactor fuels with improved performance, reliability, and safety characteristics during normal operations and accident conditions. The Accident Tolerant Fuel program focuses on applications in operating reactors or reactors with design certifications. Information from this Research, Development, and Demonstration may be applicable to the design of the next generation of Light Water Reactors. In collaboration with industry, Idaho National Laboratory is producing uranium silicide fuel pellets for use in Light Water Reactors as a more accident resistant alternative to uranium oxide based fuels.
