Standardization for Interregional Offshore Wind Transmission

The “Standardization for Interregional Offshore Wind Transmission” opportunity funds a research consortium of technical experts that identifies standardized offshore transmission equipment specifications to support coordinated procurement in the United States, with specific focus on the Atlantic Coast. The consortium will develop best practices and provide guidance on near-term state offshore solicitations and potential shared transmission solutions to promote interconnection and interoperability.

In December 2024, the Grid Deployment Office (GDO) awarded Johns Hopkins University and DNV Power Systems Advisory $1.25 million to develop and lead their ‘Planning Offshore Interregional Network Standardization (“POINTS”) Consortium over the next 12 months.

Background

The Grid Deployment Office opened an initial funding opportunity of up to $1.25 million that will advance OSW deployment along the Atlantic Coast by identifying opportunities and strategies to standardize transmission development.

This program, launched in September 2024, is managed by ConnectWerx in partnership with DOE, a collaboration made possible through an innovative Partnership Intermediary Agreement set up by the DOE's Office of Technology Transitions. This agreement enables ConnectWerx to broaden DOE’s engagement with innovative organizations and non-traditional partners, facilitating the rapid development, scaling, and deployment of clean energy solutions.
