The Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) partnered with the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) to pilot and validate the Healthy Buildings Toolkit for office buildings. These pilot study reports can help interested parties understand the value and application of healthy building analysis and tools.

PNNL Campus Pilot Study
In fiscal year (FY) 2019, FEMP piloted the toolkit framework at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory's (PNNL) Richland, Washington, campus with two buildings representing extremes within the campus' building stock (i.e., one new construction building and one legacy building). PNNL analyzed the data and calculated the potential productivity gains for the buildings.
The analysis included recommendations that could help achieve the productivity gains. The estimated utility savings and capital costs were integrated into the decision matrix and yielded a combined net present value of more than $1.8 million across both buildings over 10 years.

GSA Research Integrated Pilot Study
FEMP partnered with the GSA to test how well the toolkit could leverage existing building data rather than require in-person data collection.
To investigate this, GSA shared data for four buildings from a separate research project. This case study examined the process for analyzing large amounts of data to prioritize buildings within a portfolio and to provide customized improvement recommendations.

Fort Worth Federal Facility Pilot Study
In FY 2020, FEMP and PNNL partnered with GSA for an in-person pilot of the toolkit at a federal building in Fort Worth, Texas.
PNNL worked with the tenant agency, GSA, and facilities team to collect indoor environmental quality data, building information, and personnel statistics. PNNL's analysis identified improvement recommendations for indoor environmental quality and calculated a potential financial gain of $966,000 over 10 years.
