Sometimes the issues and tasks in Area IV at the Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL) are so complex that the Department of Energy (DOE) makes an extra effort to inform community members, and members of the public commit additional energy to learn about these activities. Read about some of the activities below:
- Soil Treatability Study: DOE is preparing to see which soil treatment technologies, if any, can effectively address soil contamination in Area IV. The Soil Treatability Study has been designed to evaluate if there are any in situ (in-place) treatment technologies that could effectively meet the requirements of the 2010 Administrative Order on Consent.
- Groundwater U: DOE partnered with the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), Boeing and NASA to provide information to the community on groundwater activities at SSFL as part of Groundwater U. In 2024, three virtual community workshops were held in February, March and April, along with an in-person site tour in April that brought around 50 community members to SSFL. This was the second time Groundwater U was held, with the first seven-part series being in-person in Spring 2011 at SSFL. Read about the 2024 Groundwater U series and the 2011 Groundwater U series.
- SRE Workshop: To respond to community concerns about the Sodium Reactor Experiment accident of 1959, which some people say was the worst nuclear meltdown in history, DOE invited three independent experts to review the historical record and present their observations at a public workshop in August 2009. About 150 people attended.
