Building America Retrofit Solutions Teams

Building America’s nine retrofit solutions teams are working to bring cost-effective solutions, high performance technologies, and best practices for existing homes to market.

The teams are funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Building America program,  with technical guidance from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

This initiative takes a multidisciplinary approach to retrofits by connecting housing organizations, technical experts, trades, manufacturers, utilities, and experienced program implementers. Each team has a lead organization supported by research, implementation, and industry members. This structure empowers teams at a local, grassroots level to meet the needs of their own communities while also demonstrating solutions that can be replicated elsewhere.

The teams’ projects, which have varied anticipated completion dates through 2028, span a wide range of residential buildings upgrades and technologies while focusing on cost effectiveness, resiliency,  and indoor health. Through a portfolio of field validation projects, the teams are de-risking technology implementation by addressing installation barriers of high performance energy-efficient technologies, including heat pumps and envelope retrofits.

The teams are working closely with community-based organizations to identify needs, goals, and technical challenges for existing U.S. homes. Teams are then developing and validating affordable and scalable solutions to address these retrofit challenges for a wide range of residential building types, including multifamily, manufactured, and single-family homes.

The teams represent regions across the country, and their solutions will be applicable to housing challenges faced by communities in different climates throughout the United States.
