Job Profile

A key goal for the bioenergy industry is to establish the necessary infrastructure needed to industrialize bioenergy production systems. From integrated biorefineries capable of converting a broad range of biomass feedstocks into affordable biofuels, bioproducts, and biopower, to upgrading current wastewater treatment infrastructure to state-of-the-art waste-to-energy facilities, civil engineers help turn ideas into reality.

Civil engineers apply their knowledge of mathematics and physical sciences to develop ways to design, construct, and maintain bioenergy-related infrastructure, while minimizing impact on the natural environment. They also play a pivotal role in assuring project operations conform to all state and federal regulations as well as maintain environmental compliance.

At the entry level, civil engineer trainees work under the supervision of senior engineers to assist in the design and construction of biofuel processing facilities. Duties may include preparation of construction documents; design of site and infrastructure improvements, including grading, utilities, erosion control; stormwater management; assisting in the preparation of reports; and limited administration of construction duties. Individuals must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree in professional engineering from a recognized school or college that has been accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering & Technology. Equivalent experience or training may substitute for the degree. Employers also value relevant experience gained through undergraduate capstone research projects, part-time employment, internships, or volunteer work.
