Tribal nations are essential partners in the pursuit of the country’s ambitious energy goals. The Department of Energy (DOE) takes our commitment to strengthening Tribal sovereignty and self-governance seriously, and we know that fulfilling Federal trust and treaty responsibilities to Tribal Nations along with robust and meaningful consultations are the cornerstones of Federal Indian policy. Regular, meaningful, and robust consultation with Tribal Nations is a prerequisite for strong nation-to-nation relationships between the United States, its federal agencies, and Tribes. This includes respect for Tribal sovereignty and the promotion of self-governance, as well as inclusivity in both policy formation and implementation.

Tribal Engagement Steering Committee
The Tribal Engagement Steering Committee at the Department of Energy coordinates tribal consultation and engagement across DOE programmatic offices and is comprised of representatives from whose work may impact Tribes. Its role is defined in DOE Order 144.1.
