DOE today announced its intent to issue multiple funding opportunity announcements totaling over $100 million for field demonstrations and other research to support better planning and operation of the electric grid.
Energy Earthshots Initiative
In 2021, the U.S. rejoined the Paris Agreement, established a goal to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by 50%-52% in 2030, launched the Global Methane Pledge, and has since taken numerous concrete actions to advance toward net-zero emissions in 2050. Achieving this goal, in concert with cooperating nations around the globe, will keep a 1.5°C limit on global temperature rise within reach and prevent unacceptable climate change impacts and risks. The drive toward net zero is also a once-in-a-generation opportunity to revitalize American industry, reduce energy costs, and improve the efficiency of our homes, businesses, and infrastructure.
DOE contributes to this national goal through a range of programs and initiatives, including regular funding disbursements that promote innovation in renewable energy, sustainable transportation, and efficiency upgrades in the industrial and building sectors. DOE also works with regulators and the private sector to prepare our power grid for the transition to net zero, and coordinates closely with communities throughout the country—especially those historically disadvantaged by the energy system—to develop net-zero strategies that suit local conditions. To facilitate planning and coordination on a national scale, DOE has developed comprehensive strategies for the decarbonization of the buildings, transportation, and industrial sectors.
To overcome some of the most difficult challenges on the road to net zero, DOE launched the Energy Earthshots™. Each of the eight shots sets ambitious technical and cost-reduction targets to pave the way for an unprecedented surge in decarbonization and clean energy production. By targeting the most carbon-intensive industrial and energy sectors of the economy, the Energy Earthshots will unlock energy system savings, enhance the livelihoods of communities throughout the country, and drastically reduce greenhouse-gas emissions.
These programs and investments create millions of jobs for American workers by developing and scaling technologies that power American homes, support community development, and cut greenhouse-gas emissions. They also help ensure that the American economy can continue to thrive through the midcentury mark and beyond.
