Our Mission
Nuclear energy is one of the most resilient, environmentally sustainable, and reliable energy sources on the grid today.
The Office of Nuclear Energy works to advance nuclear energy science and technology to meet the nation's energy, environmental, and economic needs.
What We Do
As an applied energy research and development organization, we enable innovation, support unique research infrastructure, and solve crosscutting challenges facing the nuclear energy sector to:
- Enable continued operation of existing U.S. nuclear reactors.
- Enable deployment of advanced nuclear reactors.
- Develop advanced nuclear fuel cycles.
- Maintain U.S. leadership in nuclear energy technology.
- Enable a high-performing organization.
Areas of Focus
The U.S. is developing advanced reactors that enhance efficiency, resource utilization, safety, and versatility. They come in a range of sizes and design features that will expand access to clean energy in communities around the world.
The U.S. operates the largest fleet of reactors in the world to generate nearly 20% of our nation's total electricity and almost half of our clean energy.
The nuclear fuel cycle is the process that prepares uranium for use in nuclear reactors and ensures spent fuel is safely managed, recycled, or disposed of.
Partnerships at the local, state, and tribal levels are essential to deploying nuclear energy technologies at home and abroad.
