Washington, D.C. – The Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Office of Technology Transitions (OTT) today announced 15 Technology Commercialization Interns for 2024. These interns will be working alongside National Laboratory technology transfer professionals and researchers this summer. Over a ten-week period, this cohort will immerse themselves in DOE’s world-class National Lab system, strengthen their entrepreneurial mindset, and delve into energy technology markets.
Since the program’s inception in 2021, the Technology Commercialization Internship (TCI) program has trained 47 students from 42 collegiate institutions across the nation. The 2024 cohort will add another 15 students representing 15 universities across 13 states. This cohort will be the first time in the program's history where interns have the opportunity to work on-site at the laboratories. Ten DOE National Laboratories are participating in this round of the TCI Program.
“Workforce development is a critical effort needed to meet the nation’s climate goals,” said DOE Chief Commercialization Officer and Director of OTT, Dr. Vanessa Z. Chan. “This program introduces bright young minds to the DOE National Lab complex and boosts problem-solving skills at crossroads of technology and business.”
The program, in collaboration with the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), will kick off in May with a packed schedule of in-person activities in Washington D.C. Throughout the program, students will be assigned to one of DOE’s National Laboratories where they will work alongside a team of technology transfer professionals to explore viable markets for DOE technology. The interns will present the results of their projects to a panel of DOE and industry experts at the end of the summer.
