Washington, D.C. – The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Office of Technology Transitions (OTT) announced today 225 teams from 117 schools that will compete in the EnergyTech University Prize (EnergyTech UP) 2024 Student Track. These selected teams attend universities located across the United States, representing 39 states, plus the District of Columbia.

“We see immense value in supporting the next generation of clean energy leaders through EnergyTech UP” said DOE Chief Commercialization Officer and Director of OTT, Dr. Vanessa Z. Chan. “These teams are working to develop attainable, equitable, scalable energy technologies and business opportunities. They have the potential to profoundly impact the cleantech industry, and we’re proud to provide resources that can help bolster their ideas.”

Now entering its third year of competition, the EnergyTech UP Student Track asks collegiate teams to develop actionable plans for business and commercialization opportunities around high-potential energy technologies. Competitors also get free, exclusive access to OTT’s Energy I-Corps curriculum, and finalists receive mentorship from industry leaders to help them hone their proposals.

Participating in this prize can shape students’ future careers as engineers, policymakers, entrepreneurs, market analysts, and project developers.

Teams will compete for more than $400,000 in cash prizes through three phases––Explore, Refine, and Pitch––with Bonus Prize winners also being selected along the way. The first phase will culminate in regional Explore Events, where teams will present their proposals to a panel of judges in the hopes of being selected as a finalist.

Once finalists are selected, they will refine their ideas before pitching their complete business plans at Zpryme’s 2024 Energy Thought Summit in Austin, Texas, this April. EnergyTech UP’s winning collegiate teams will have successfully identified a promising energy technology, carefully assessed its market potential, and created a thorough business plan for commercialization.

Expanding EnergyTech UP’s Collegiate Impact

This year, the Energy Tech University Prize also offers an additional Faculty Track to directly support and incentivize collegiate faculty members. Faculty Track participants will compete for a total prize pool of $100,000 by developing proposals for implementation and expansion of their school’s energy technology commercialization or entrepreneurship activities. The deadline to submit applications to the Faculty Track’s Implement Phase is April 5, 2024.

Ten faculty teams were recently selected to participate in this three-phase competition, earning $4,000 each for their proposals. Competing faculty will be provided with targeted access to a DOE mentor and DOE resources.
