October 3, 2024WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Office of Technology Transitions (OTT) has announced nine Phase 2 winners for the Making Advanced Technology Commercialization Harmonized (Lab MATCH) prize.
The three-phase Lab MATCH prize, funded by the Technology Commercialization Fund, asks entrepreneurs to create actionable plans for groundbreaking National Laboratory intellectual property (IP) to be brought to market.
After competing in and winning Phase 1 of the prize, all 19 competitors in Phase 2 were asked to develop a more detailed pathway to commercialization. For their progress in Phase 2, each winning team will be awarded $30,000 in cash prizes and earn their eligibility to compete in Phase 3 of the prize.
“The Lab MATCH prize is an exciting opportunity for entrepreneurs and National Labs to collaboratively accelerate the commercialization of clean energy technologies” said DOE Chief Commercialization Officer and Director of OTT, Dr. Vanessa Chan. “We look forward to seeing the many innovative energy solutions that will be brought to market thanks to this prize.”
Intellectual property is being commercialized across a dozen different technology areas thanks to the Lab MATCH prize, from carbon capture to energy storage and every cleantech area in between. Competitors are working with researchers at three different U.S. Department of Energy National Labs to develop their pathways to market – Sandia National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and National Renewable Energy Lab.
Lab MATCH Phase 2 Winners
In Lab MATCH Phase 2, the Plan Phase, winners were selected based on their ability to ensure the successful commercialization of the IP they identified in Phase 1, providing detailed plans for action, partners, timelines, and more.
Congratulations to the Lab MATCH Phase 2 winners!
- Active Surfaces Inc. (Woburn, MA)
National Renewable Energy Laboratory – Photovoltaic (PV) - All Correct Solar - Formerly All Drone Science (Gresham, OR)
National Renewable Energy Laboratory – Photovoltaic (PV) - Expanding Frontiers (Brownsville, TX)
Oak Ridge National Laboratory – Carbon Capture - GridFlow (Albuquerque, NM)
Sandia National Laboratory – Energy Storage - LEAF Automation (Akron, OH)
National Renewable Energy Laboratory – Photovoltaic (PV) - Marsan Technology (Milledgeville, GA)
National Renewable Energy Laboratory – Buildings - NanoSieve (Miami Beach, FL)
Sandia National Laboratory – Gas Absorption - ThermoVerse (Detroit, MI)
Oak Ridge National Laboratory – Buildings - Torpel (Charlottesville, VA)
Sandia National Laboratory – Energy Storage
Next, the nine winning teams from Phase 2, the Plan Phase, will compete in Phase 3, the Action Phase. In this final phase of the prize, competitors will collaborate closely with National Laboratory researchers and technology transfer offices to demonstrate significant progress toward IP commercialization. Phase 3 is set to conclude at the end of March, and up to three winning teams will each be awarded a $100,000 grand prize!
