September 7, 2023WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Technology Transitions (OTT), in partnership with the Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED), announced $15.5 million for two projects from the Collaborative Alignment for Critical Technology Industries Lab Call. The projects selected for negotiation will establish lab-led industry and stakeholder working groups that will collaboratively identify industry-wide adoption challenges and develop and begin to implement recommendations and best practices for their resolution. The lab call is focused on industry alignment for clean hydrogen and long duration energy storage (LDES) technologies.
"Commercializing clean hydrogen and long duration energy storage requires alignment with the entire ecosystem so collectively all of us can address the adoption challenges" said DOE Chief Commercialization Officer and Director of the Office of Technology Transitions Dr. Vanessa Z. Chan. "The selected National Labs will stand up consortia with industry and other stakeholders to tackle the biggest adoption challenges together."
Pre-competitive industry consortia are an important avenue for unbiased discussions, impactful alignment of best practices, idea sharing, and meetings that engage and address industry, regulatory bodies, and local communities to ensure market liftoff. The lab call is funded by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, also known as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), as part of the DOE Technology Commercialization Fund (TCF). Partners have committed over $7.5 million of additional funding so far.
The following two projects have been selected for award negotiations:
- The National Consortium for the Advancement of LDES Technologies: Sandia National Laboratories, in partnership with Argonne National Laboratory, Idaho National Laboratory, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, will stand up this consortium. The Consortium will enable, facilitate, and coalesce collaborative efforts between public and private entities to address the core issues facing LDES commercialization, including investor confidence, market planning, interconnection, standardization, safety, economic evaluation, and more. More than 87 external partners have committed to the project, including local government agencies, utilities, and non-profits.
- The Clean Hydrogen Technology Alignment Cooperative (CHyTAC): The National Renewable Energy Laboratory, in partnership with Argonne National Laboratory, Idaho National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and Sandia National Laboratories, will launch this project. CHyTAC, will identify, disseminate, and drive application of consensus-driven solutions for rapidly realizable interconnectivity of clean hydrogen deployments, including vendor agnostic connection pathways and equipment, congruent operating conditions, and safe operating procedures. Several organizations, including utilities, industry groups, and trade organizations, have committed to the project.
