Southwestern’s mission of marketing and delivering Federal hydroelectric power fully supports the U.S. Department of Energy’s strategic goal of improving the quality of the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and environmental impacts to land, water, and air from energy production.
In an average year, the environmentally sound energy marketed by Southwestern from hydropower plants owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers saves the American people the equivalent of 9.7 million barrels of oil, 3.0 million tons of coal, or 42.8 billion cubic feet of natural gas. This cost-based energy also prevents the emission of greenhouse gases equivalent to 4.5 million tons of carbon dioxide.
As a steward of one of our Nation’s most precious resources – water – Southwestern also dedicates significant effort in coordinating operating activities with our customers, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, state game, fish and wildlife agencies, organized recreational groups, and other interests to find ways to accommodate the needs of competing water users whenever possible while still meeting our contractual requirements to provide electricity to our customers.
