Use External Resources reference content outside of the CMS.

External Resources link to pages or resources outside of Energy.gov

Helpful Hint

When you are referencing a site outside of Energy.gov, make sure you begin the link with https:// rather than http:// to promote security!

How to Create a New External Resource: 

REQUIRED STEPS: 

  1. Select Add External Resource under the Content - Add Media option of the shortcut bar 
  2. Enter the External Resource Name
  3. Enter the External URL in the URL text box. Start typing "https://.." and enter the full URL of the external link
    1. Note: This is not supported, but you can also enter an internal path such as /node/12345 or an external URL such as https://example.com. Enter <front> to link to the front page. Enter <nolink> to display link text only.
  4. Enter Link Text.
  5. Select the Primary Office under Office Assignments if prompted.  
  6. Click save to successfully add your External Resource.

ADVANCED STEPS:

  1. Select Add External Resource under the Content - Add Media option of the shortcut bar 
  2. Enter the External Resource Name
  3. Optional: Enter a Short Title . The short title displays as the link text when the node is referenced in a listing (static or dynamic).
  4. Optional: Enter the Summary Text.
  5. Optional: Add Alternative Thumbnail. You may provide an optional image that will be used as a thumbnail or background image. 
  6. Optiona: Select Article type. 
  7. Optional: Select Display Date and Time. 
  8. Enter the External URL in the URL text box. Start typing "https://.." and enter the full URL of the external link

  9. Enter Link Text.
  10. Optional; Add taxonomy term(s) as appropriate in the tagging box.

  11. Select the Primary Office under Office Assignments if prompted.  
  12. Optional: Edit the Revision Information, URL alias, and Authoring Information as necessary.
  13. Click save to successfully add your External Resource.
