The High Energy Density Laboratory Plasmas subprogram includes research that explores matter at extreme conditions of temperature, density, and pressure. This includes topics from laboratory astrophysics and planetary science to the structure and dynamics of matter at the atomic scale. Scientists use powerful lasers to probe the physics of laser-plasma interactions and study the structure of magnetized plasmas.

- The LaserNetUS network serves scientists in the United States by providing access to domestic user facilities and enabling a broad range of frontier scientific research.
- It is directly responsive to recommendations made in the recently released National Academy of Sciences Report with regard to US strategy in high intensity laser research, “Opportunities in Intense Ultrafast Lasers: Reaching for the Brightest Light”.
- Currently the network includes six academic- and three national lab-based high intensity laser facilities.
