PADUCAH, Ky. — In spite of the challenges the coronavirus continues to present, the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Paducah Site provided local students a way to safely compete in this year’s West Kentucky Regional Science Bowl via a virtual competition.

On Friday, February 11, 2022, Calloway County High School won DOE’s virtual West Kentucky Regional Science Bowl. The five-member team will compete in DOE’s National Science Bowl finals, which will be conducted virtually from April 28 to May 2, 2022.

“Thank you to DOE for finding a way to allow these events to continue in the midst of a global pandemic,” Calloway County High School Academic Team Coach Erica Gray said. “Our team has worked hard to get here and I’m proud of their ability to adapt to all of the changes we’ve had to make over the last two years. It really demonstrates our team’s motto ‘hard work pays off.’”

The Regional Science Bowl tournament is a quick-recall, fast-paced, question-and-answer contest. During the tournament, high school students are quizzed on their knowledge of biology, chemistry, Earth and space, energy, mathematics and physics.

Paducah Tilghman High School finished second and McCracken County High School finished third in the regional competition.

Other high schools competing in this year’s virtual event were Marshall County and Union County high schools in Kentucky; and Massac County High School in Illinois.

“With the many challenges the coronavirus has presented to local educators and students, we are pleased to host this virtual event, giving our students the chance to showcase their knowledge and talents,” Paducah Site Lead Jennifer Woodard of DOE’s Portsmouth/Paducah Project Office (PPPO) said. “This year’s winning team will have the unique opportunity to compete at the national level amongst some of the nation’s brightest students and we are excited to provide them that opportunity.”

The top 16 high school and middle school teams in the National Science Bowl® finals will receive $1,000 for their schools’ science departments. Each year, more than 14,000 students from across the country compete in the national competition. Since the event began 30 years ago, more than 315,000 students have competed.

Sponsors of the 14th Annual DOE Regional Science Bowl include: DOE, Paducah Area Chamber of Commerce, University of Kentucky College of Engineering, Four Rivers Nuclear Partnership, Petter Business Supply, Mid America Conversion Services, Swift and Staley, Beltline, Enterprise Technical Assistance Services, Geo-Syntech, Healthworks, Northwind, Paducah Water, Veolia, HDR Engineering, GEO Consultants and Chase Environmental.

The event is organized by employees and contractors of DOE PPPO. More than 50 volunteers serve as moderators, judges, technical advisors, and scorekeepers. DOE’s Office of Science manages the National Science Bowl® finals competition. More information is available at https://science.osti.gov/wdts/nsb.
