Microgrids R&D Technology Area: Control and Operation Technologies 

Advancements in control and operation technologies enable efficient, safe, and secure microgrid operations in grid-connected and islanded mode, and in transitioning between the two modes.  

Activities 

Microgrid Protection 

This project develops new solutions to protect stand-alone/individual microgrids, direct current microgrids, networked microgrids, and microgrids with dynamic boundaries. These solutions also provide a roadmap for maintaining a safe and reliable grid of the future with microgrids as the building block.

Beyond DERMS

The project, “Beyond DERMS,” developed and demonstrated a software platform that could aggregate millions of DERs and use them to support a wide range of grid services. The results demonstrate how the platform can aggregate DERs by leveraging emerging ‘internet of energy’ technologies to simultaneously solve the grid problems of today and prepare for the challenges of tomorrow beyond the capabilities of existing DERMS.
