Background
Direct air capture (DAC) is a process that separates carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air, helping to reduce legacy CO2 in the atmosphere. The separated CO2 can then be safely and permanently stored deep underground or converted into useful carbon-containing products like concrete that prevent its release back into the atmosphere. Widespread deployment of innovative DAC technologies that capture emissions are key to reinforcing our nation’s global competitiveness and delivering new economic opportunities for American communities and industries.
Program Overview
The Regional DAC Hubs Program helps to accelerate the demonstration and deployment of DAC technologies. OCED’s DAC Hubs Program will develop four domestic direct air capture hubs. Each will demonstrate a DAC technology or suite of technologies at a commercial scale with the potential for capturing at least 1 million metric tons of CO2 annually from the atmosphere. Once captured, the CO2 will be permanently stored in a geologic formation or converted into new products.
Current Funding Opportunities
In December 2024, OCED issued a reoccurring Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to fund up to $1.8 billion for the design, construction, and operation of mid- and large-scale commercial direct air capture (DAC) facilities and infrastructure access platforms. Deadlines for both Concept Papers and Pre-Applications are due by January 31, 2025, and full applications due by July 31, 2025. Learn more here.
