Long-Duration Energy Storage Demonstrations Update

In November 2022, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED) opened applications for nearly $350 million in funding to develop Long-Duration Energy Storage solutions to support a low-cost, reliable, carbon-free electric grid and expand America’s global leadership in energy storage.

The first stage of this funding application process required Letter of Intent submittals that were due on December 22, 2022.  Full Applications for the Long-Duration Energy Storage Funding Opportunity Announcement were due on March 3, 2023.

On September 22, 2023, OCED  announced  projects selected for award negotiations following a rigorous Merit Review process to identify meritorious applications to the Long-Duration Energy Storage Demonstrations Program based on the criteria listed in the Funding Opportunity Announcement. OCED began awarding LDES projects in June 2024.

On July 2, 2024, OCED issued a Notice of Intent to fund up to $100 million to support technology demonstrations for energy storage solutions at the pilot scale, focusing on non-lithium technologies, long-duration (10+ hour discharge) systems, and stationary storage applications. On September 5, 2024, OCED opened applications for up to $100 million in funding to support pilot-scale energy storage demonstration projects. This funding will focus on non-lithium technologies, long-duration (10+ hour discharge) systems, and stationary storage applications.
