In April 2023, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED) opened applications for up to $450 million in funding to advance clean energy demonstration projects on current and former mine land. This program will demonstrate the technical and economic viability of up to five clean energy projects across geographically diverse regions on current and former mine land with at least two of these projects being solar.
The first stage of this funding application process required Concept Papers that were due on May 11, 2023. OCED notified those who submitted Concept Papers in June 2023 that they were either encouraged or discouraged from submitting a Full Application. Full Applications for the Clean Energy Demonstration Program on Current and Former Mine Land (CEML) Funding Opportunity Announcement were due on August 31, 2023.
On March 21, 2024, OCED announced projects selected for award negotiations following a rigorous Merit Review process to identify meritorious applications to the Clean Energy Demonstration Program on Current and Former Mine Land based on the criteria listed in the Funding Opportunity Announcement.
