In February 2023, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED) opened applications for up to $820 million in funding for the Carbon Capture Large-Scale Pilot Projects to de-risk transformational carbon capture technologies and catalyze significant follow-on investments for commercial-scale demonstrations on carbon emission sources across the power and industrial sectors.
The first stage of this funding application process required Concept Paper submittals that were due on April 5, 2023. OCED notified those who submitted Concept Papers in May 2023 that they were either encouraged or discouraged from submitting a Full Application. Full Applications for the Carbon Capture Large-Scale Pilot Funding Opportunity Announcement were due on June 21, 2023.
On February 2, 2024, OCED announced projects selected for award negotiations following a rigorous Merit Review process to identify meritorious applications to the Carbon Capture Large-Scale Pilot Projects based on the criteria listed in the Funding Opportunity Announcement. Awards are being made on an ongoing basis, starting in August 2024.
With funding from both the Carbon Capture Demonstrations Projects Program and Carbon Capture Large-Scale Pilot Projects Program, on September 27, 2024, OCED issued a Notice of Intent (NOI) to fund up to $1.3 billion for transformational large-scale carbon capture, utilization, and storage technologies. On December 17, 2024, OCED opened applications to fund up to $1.3 billion for transformational large-scale carbon capture, utilization, and storage technologies.
