AMMTO released a request for information (RFI) to gather input on its draft harsh environment materials (HEM) research, development, and demonstration landscape document.
Advanced Materials & Manufacturing Technologies Office
January 16, 2025Today, the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office (AMMTO) issued a request for information (RFI) to gather input on its draft Harsh Environment Materials (HEM) Research, Development, and Demonstration Landscape document. Harsh service conditions include many environments with stressors such as high temperature, corrosive chemical exposure, irradiation, and many others that put significant strains on material performance. These harsh conditions are common in energy generation applications and industrial facilities.
Advanced, high-performance HEM components are needed to achieve energy efficiency gains, improved performance, and lower overall costs in technologies for energy production/conversion, energy storage, and energy utilization.
DOE requests input from industry, academia, research laboratories, government agencies, and other stakeholders on issues related to HEM research, development, and demonstration.
The goal of this RFI is to collect feedback on AMMTO’s vision for prioritizing advancements in HEM for energy generation applications and industrial processes. These responses will be used to shape the final landscape draft, which will then be used by DOE to help inform future HEM technology funding opportunities and investment strategies.
Specifically, DOE would like feedback on:
- Framework for how DOE prioritizes investment to drive real world impacts.
- Significant crosscutting opportunities, challenges, and enablers for advancing materials and manufacturing technologies in a way that enables greater efficiency, improved performance, and/or greater cost competitiveness.
- Acceleration for both the scale-up and deployment of new technologies.
- Energy efficiency and generation focus areas.
Additional Information
Responses to the RFI must be submitted electronically to [email protected] no later than 5 p.m. ET on March 15, 2025. View the RFI and the draft landscape.
