The Office of Enterprise Assessments (EA): (1) performs independent assessments for DOE senior leadership that report on whether national security assets are appropriately protected and Departmental operations provide for the safety of employees and the public; (2) implements DOE's regulatory enforcement program to promote contractor compliance with the Department’s safety and information security requirements; and (3) operates the Department’s National Training Center (NTC) to foster excellence in workforce leadership and technical capabilities.

Areas of Focus

  • The Office of Safeguards and Security Assessments conducts independent evaluations of the effectiveness of safeguards and security policies and programs throughout the Department, including those for protecting special nuclear material and classified and sensitive information, and makes extensive use of large- and small-scale performance testing to realistically evaluate site safeguards and security defense capabilities.

  • The Office of Cyber Assessments conducts independent evaluations of the effectiveness of classified and unclassified cybersecurity policies and programs throughout the Department that include performing detailed network penetration testing to detect vulnerabilities and risks that could be exploited by sophisticated adversaries or malicious insiders. The Office also analyzes cybersecurity trends and studies complex-wide issues to provide feedback on essential information assurance practices to DOE Headquarters and sites.

  • The Office of Enterprise Assessments conducts independent evaluations that provide objective information and constructive feedback on programs for and performance in protecting workers, the public and the environment from the nuclear and industrial hazards associated with DOE's past and present operations, with a particular focus on nuclear facility construction projects and high hazard nuclear operations.

  • EA's Office of Enforcement promotes overall improvement in the Department's safety and security programs by conducting enforcement activities for federal regulatory requirements pertaining to worker safety and health, nuclear safety, and information security under authorities granted to the Secretary of Energy by the Atomic Energy Act.

  • The Office of Enterprise Assessments operates the National Training Center (NTC), the Department’s Center of Excellence for Security and Safety Training and Professional Development. The NTC develops and delivers standardized health, safety, safeguards, security, and protective force training for DOE and National Nuclear Security Administration federal and contractor personnel to foster excellence in workforce leadership and technical capabilities.
