NNSA Clean Energy Project at Nevada National Security Site

NNSS Solar

In June 2023, DOE announced a new initiative to increase energy production by making DOE land available for potential development of Carbon Free Energy (CFE) electricity generation. DOE is undertaking this initiative under Executive Order 14057, Catalyzing Clean Energy Industries and Jobs Through Federal Sustainability. The department’s goal is to identify and prioritize opportunities where there is potential for onsite energy projects and to solicit feedback from tribes, industry, and communities.

The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) identified about 2,400 acres of potentially available land at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) for consideration for solar energy development. A Request for Qualifications (RFQ) pertaining to a Realty Agreement (easement) was issued to identify developers interested in executing a commercial, clean energy solar project on NNSA-administered land at the NNSS.

EM-owned sites identified about 40,000 acres of potential land at the Hanford Site in Washington, Savannah River Site in South Carolina, and the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in New Mexico. Additional land was identified at the Idaho National Laboratory (Office of Nuclear Energy).
