Blue Economy Resources

Through its broad portfolio of projects, the Powering the Blue Economy initiative works to protect, understand, and leverage the immense power and promise of the oceans to help the country achieve its collective economic, social, and environmental goals. Collaboration and engagement are central to efforts supporting communities and marine life while sustainably providing power to the blue economy.

Download the Powering the Blue Economy brochure to learn more about energy innovation in the blue economy, energy resiliency for coastal and islanded communities, and the initiative’s overall progress.

Published in April 2019, this report launched the Powering the Blue Economy initiative. Both the report and the ongoing research encapsulates feedback from blue economy stakeholders and identifies potential opportunities and challenges for marine energy in different ocean applications. This report and subsequent programmatic activities have begun to illuminate the compelling need for energy innovation in the blue economy as a potentially critical element underlying the success of multiple sectors across scientific, economic, and security domains.

The Water Power Technologies Office is also exploring partnerships between the marine renewable energy industry, coastal stakeholders, and blue economy sectors to address energy challenges that these groups face.

PRIMRE

The Portal and Repository for Information on Marine Renewable Energy, or PRIMRE, serves as a clearinghouse for information on engineering and technologies, resource characterization, device performance, and environmental effects of marine energy projects. Offering access to a vast array of research, code, and resource characterization data, PRIMRE provides access to information that can enable the marine energy community to build upon the successes of others to innovate and advance the adoption of these new technologies.
