The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is proposing to provide funding to Iowa State University to develop a catalyst and conversion process to turn single-use plastic into lubricating oils from upcycled plastic (LOUP). Oils would be evaluated for their ability to reduce friction and wear. Techno-economic analyses (TEA) and lifecycle analyses (LCA) would assess the process for economic viability, scalability, and environmental effects.
