This activity is for completing deactivation of the 236-H By-Product Facility. This facility includes the retired Burst Test Process, the He-3 Purification process and current storage area for He-3 cylinders. The purpose of deactivation is to reduce risk while providing a seamless transition from operations to a low-cost surveillance and maintenance mode. At the completion of deactivation, the facility will be in a “cold, dark, and dry” state. All contaminated equipment will have been removed and the only tritium contamination remaining will be on the south end interior floor/walls and in the facility exhaust duct. The deactivation will occur in three phases. Phase 1 will remove the process equipment which contains the bulk of the tritium. During phase 2 the facility piping will remain open to the air hood for an extended period time to ensure significant tritium will not be encountered by construction personnel during process equipment removal. The SAR will be modified during this period, as well as design and work packages prepared. During phase 3 the remaining contaminated process equipment and pipe will be removed and the remainder of the deactivation process completed including air-gapping electricity, fire suppression, and utilities.
