FEMP interns visit federal sites to learn about energy- and water-efficient technologies agencies have implemented to meet their goals and requirements.

The Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) administers a special U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Scholars Program. This program introduces students or recent college graduates to the DOE and other federal agencies' missions and operations.

The goal of the FEMP DOE Scholars Program is to increase the agility and skills of the federal workforce through training including enhancing opportunities for veterans-preference interns aligned with DOE's emphasis on catalyzing federal infrastructure investments while strengthening national energy security and resilience, cybersecurity, and building optimization.

Interns are selected by FEMP and placed in federal agencies in the Washington, D.C., area. The duration of the internships is generally from early June to mid-August.

  • To be eligible for the FEMP DOE Scholars Program, applicants must be U.S. citizens undergraduate or graduate students pursuing degrees; or recent graduates who have degrees in a science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) discipline or in a discipline that supports the DOE mission.

  • DOE Scholars have a competitive edge by becoming familiar with federal agency functions and showcasing their education, talent, and skills

Stipends are $750 per week with a housing allowance of $300 per week and daily commuting expenses of $20 week. Inbound and outbound travel to and from the appointment site will be reimbursed up to $1,000 for participants living more than 50 miles one way from their appointment site.
