Environment, Safety, and Health

NNSA's Office of Environment, Safety, and Health (ESH) contributes to national security by managing the operational NNSA risks of safety, transportation, materials integration, waste management, and the environment.

ESH enables the accomplishment of NNSA’s vital national security missions by:

  • Implementation of NNSA’s nuclear safety authorities;
  • Effective safety support, policy development, and implementation;
  • Weapons components and radioactive and hazardous materials to flow safely and securely across the Nuclear Security Enterprise;
  • Integration of nuclear material management activities across DOE/NNSA programs;
  • Leadership to advance sustainability goal progress; and
  • Enterprise-wide management of radioactive waste, long-term stewardship, sustainability, and utilities.

ESH is a functional support office whose work enables the success of multiple NNSA customers including the Administrator, Offices of Defense Programs and Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation, and the field offices.
