NNSA’s annual Stockpile Stewardship and Management Plan delivered to Congress

WASHINGTON – The Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration today released the Fiscal Year 2022 Stockpile Stewardship and Management Plan, NNSA’s annual report describing its comprehensive approach to maintaining the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile and the capabilities of the nuclear security enterprise.

This year’s SSMP outlines DOE/NNSA’s plan to meet Department of Defense requirements, including reestablishing the capability to produce plutonium pits, and achieving the first production unit for the W80-4 Life Extension Program and W87-1 Modification Program. It also highlights 2021 successes such as the first production unit delivery of both the B61-12 life extension and W88 Alteration 370 warhead and provides the status of the additional programs and projects necessary to support the mission.

“The SSMP is our annual report to Congress on NNSA’s plans to deliver the safe, secure, effective nuclear stockpile and the associated science and infrastructure required for deterrence,” said Jill Hruby, Under Secretary of Energy for Nuclear Security and NNSA Administrator. “It focuses on NNSA’s efforts to deliver products and infrastructure that meet the nation’s requirements, and to continue to advance and apply our science and engineering capabilities in maintaining the stockpile without the need for explosive nuclear testing.”

NNSA publishes a companion to the SSMP, the annual “Prevent, Counter, and Respond: A Strategic Plan to Reduce Global Nuclear Threats” report to Congress, on activities to advance nuclear nonproliferation and reduce global nuclear threats. NNSA published the most recent edition of “Prevent, Counter, and Respond” in December.
