May 30, 2024The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafeal M. Grossi presented the final International Physical Protection Advisory Service (IPPAS) report to the Department of Energy Deputy Secretary David Turk in a formal ceremony at the International Conference on Nuclear Security (ICONS) in Vienna. ICONS is a scientific and technical conference comprised of high-level policy discussions on the theme of nuclear security. It provides a global forum for ministers, policymakers, senior officials, and nuclear security experts to discuss the future of nuclear security worldwide.
During the bilateral meeting with Director General Grossi, Deputy Secretary Turk received the report and shared the United States’ confidence in the IAEA and recognized the critical role the agency plays in promoting global nuclear security.
From February 26 to March 8, 2024, NNSA hosted a team of nine IAEA-chosen experts to review the country’s nuclear security regime as part of the second U.S. IPPAS mission. The IAEA-chosen team of experts concluded at the end of the mission that the U.S. has a robust nuclear security regime with several good practices that other IAEA member states can model. In addition, the experts made recommendations and suggestions for the U.S. to further strengthen its nuclear security procedures and practices.
Hosting an IPPAS mission models good global nuclear security citizenship and promotes the importance of IAEA advisory missions, including IPPAS missions, for strengthening nuclear security, and demonstrated the United States’ continued commitment to nuclear security excellence.
