Name: Jorge Ortega
Position/Office: Enterprise Information System Security Manager
How do you support NNSA?
My role as an Information System Security Manager is to ensure that our information systems comply with agency policies and federal laws and are protected from malicious actors who may try to harm the NNSA mission.
What is your personal background, and how has that shaped you and your approach to your career?
My parents and I migrated to the United States in search of a better life. As a young man, I was interested in the military and joined the Marine Corps because I believed it would give me a sense of purpose. As a first-generation immigrant, I witnessed the hard work my parents put in to provide for my sister and me. Being a part of the Marine Corps gave me a sense of camaraderie that I still cherish today and it taught me valuable leadership skills.
What did you study in school and how did it impact you personally and professionally?
I have a Bachelor of Science in Information Systems. I’m currently enrolled in Georgetown University’s Master’s in Cybersecurity Risk Management program. I was never one for school, but as I got older, I realized that to better yourself both personally and professionally, one has to keep learning.
What led you to a career in nuclear security?
I was looking for an opportunity to grow in my career as an Information System Security Officer (ISSO) and was fortunate to be hired as an ISSO where I manage a physical security system responsible for safeguarding NNSA sites of high strategic significance.
What is the best part about your job?
I think the people who work in a job are what make it good or bad. Working for the NNSA, I am happy to say that the people I work with are the best part of my job. They are smart, talented, and kind-hearted, which means a lot to me.
Tell us something interesting about yourself.
I enjoy gardening, especially in the evenings when I tend to my vegetable garden. My garden consists of peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, melons, and onions.
What advice would you have for anyone interested in a career in nuclear security?
Having served in the military and now working for the NNSA, I understand and respect the importance of being a public servant. It means making a positive impact through your work and building strong relationships. My advice for anyone looking for a career in nuclear security would be to stay hungry, be humble, and always aspire to learn.
Who is someone that inspires you and why?
My wife is always there for me, providing support and inspiration to be the best version of myself. She has been with me through many sleepless nights while I studied for a certificate and she continues to support me as I work towards my master's degree. Her unwavering support has been invaluable to me.
