September is National Preparedness Month. In case of emergency, whether it be a natural disaster, disease epidemic or terrorist attack, it is vital to have a plan for you and your family.
The first step toward preparedness is an emergency kit. Some items may seem obvious, like bottled water and first aid supplies, but local maps may become essential if internet and cell service is interrupted. Also, it may slip your mind in a time of crisis that your furry friends have certain needs of their own.
If you and your loved ones are separated during an emergency, it’s important to know how to get in touch and where you will meet up. A communication plan with important phone numbers and addresses can help make sure nobody panics.
As an emergency unfolds, you will want to tune in to local radio stations for updates and safety guidance. Emergency alerts will keep you informed and let you know where you can safely shelter or when it is time to evacuate.
It is important to understand that local and national authorities will do their utmost to assist your community, but you are the help until help arrives. Look out for your neighbors and be ready to lend a hand.
