PROJECT SUMMARY
In September 2023, the Department of Energy announced the closing of a $3 billion partial loan guarantee to Sunnova Energy Corporation’s Project Hestia. The Project will make distributed energy resources — including residential rooftop solar, battery storage, and virtual power plant-ready, consumer-facing software — available to more American homeowners.
TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION
Project Hestia will offer homeowners innovative software to accompany solar energy and batteries and to support energy-conscious decision-making. The software will give customers insight into their household’s energy usage and carbon dioxide emissions, allowing customers to reduce electricity use—or even contribute electricity to the system in markets that allow such contributions—when the grid is under stress.
ECONOMIC IMPACT
Project Hestia will create more than 3,400 good-paying, high-quality American jobs, supporting the installation and maintenance of clean energy systems.
CLIMATE BENEFIT
By increasing distributed solar energy supply and batteries, Project Hestia will decrease grid-supplied energy consumption, decrease greenhouse gas emissions, and increase power reliability and resilience. Over the next 25 years, the approximately 568 MW project (comprised of rooftop solar installations, residential battery systems, and smart software to inform energy decisions) is expected to avoid at least an estimated 7.1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide—roughly equivalent to eliminating carbon dioxide emissions from 1.5 million vehicles on the nation’s roads for a year.
