FUSRAP sites supported national defense activities in the past. The communities that host these sites continue to support remediation, long-term stewardship, and beneficial reuse.
Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial Action Program (FUSRAP) sites and communities played a critical role in America’s nuclear history by supporting the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Manhattan Project, nuclear weapons development, and experimental peace-time nuclear energy applications to help the nation prevail during World War II and the Cold War. USACE is responsible for FUSRAP site remediation. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Legacy Management (LM) provides federal stewardship for cleaned up FUSRAP sites that have remedies in place. Many of these sites have been returned to local communities for beneficial reuse.
Communities that are home to active and completed FUSRAP sites, and the people who worked at the sites, are recognized for their service to America in a time of great need during the U.S. Army Manhattan Engineer District and U.S. Atomic Energy Commission eras. USACE and LM continue to honor the communities and workers by ensuring proper cleanup, performing long-term surveillance and maintenance, and returning the privately owned and publicly used land to a state of beneficial use.
In fall 2019, LM and the FUSRAP team began developing a public-facing, free-standing interpretive exhibit that would communicate FUSRAP history and community significance. With LM and USACE input, the historical display design was finalized in spring 2021. The exhibit is intended for public viewing, and can be transported to events, conferences, meetings, and FUSRAP communities by request. The display was first presented as part of the 2022 National Waste Management Conference in Phoenix, Arizona.
