Chariot, Alaska, Site

Chariot, Alaska, Site map.

The DOE Office of Legacy Management took responsibility for long-term surveillance and maintenance at the Chariot site in 2005. The Chariot site (a Plowshare Site/Offsite) requires routine inspections, records-related activities, and stakeholder support. For more information about the Chariot site, view the fact sheet.

The U.S. Atomic Energy Commission identified Chariot as a potential location to excavate a harbor using a series of nuclear explosions, but later cancelled work at the Project Chariot site because of strong public opposition. No nuclear explosions were conducted at the site and no nuclear devices were ever brought there.

In July 2023, LM staff installed institutional control markers at the Baker, Dog, X-1, and Charlie borehole locations. These markers physically attest to the nondisturbance agreements between LM, the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, and Arctic Slope Regional Corporation. These efforts limit land disturbance and will help preserve the natural beauty of the Point Hope area.
